Theres a lot to love about in
this collection of great songs, sung with style by Jill Keating to her father,
Johns brilliant arrangements, performed by some of the best session
musicians around and conducted by talented Musical Director, Dave Clackett.
Indeed, the quality shines out from every track on this disc.
You want bright,
exciting songs? Jill delivers them from the brassy track Smile, through
Lets Fall in Love, You Better Love Me (While You May), Old Devil Moon,
and a quirky arrangement of the title track Im a Dreamer to There Will
Never Be Another You, all delivered with pace and brilliance.
You want
quieter, more emotional numbers? There are plenty. Jills warm, gentle
versions of Make Someone Happy, the romance of The Very Thought of You
(originally arranged for Tony Bennett), the dreamy Latin standard Corcovado,
the reflective Autumn in New York, and the almost unbearably poignant The
Masquerade is Over.
Best of all there are three John Keating originals, all of which
Jill gives undeniably definitive performances. This Hotel, and This Year, both
of which Jills father composed for the slick 1967 movie based on the
Arthur Hailey novel. Sung in the film by Carmen McRae, Jill brings a new
freshness and depth of feeling to the lyrics; and the emotionally-charged
Its Not Going That Way which perfectly showcases Jills
amazing range.
This is not background music and
its not an album to be listened to once and filed away. Jill
Keatings debut CD will touch you and stay with you forever. |
